The unmistakable smell of death, though, that’s only been here for four or five days - at first just whiffs but then no denying it. The ducts were cleaned earlier this year so they shouldn’t be an issue, but the allergic/thick/dizzy feeling is like it was when they needed cleaning. The thick air feeling has been going on for maybe a week and half now - at first we thought it was mold. That last is harder to use consistently since I work from home and it makes most of the house unsafe for several hours when I do use it. So far I am using charcoal packs, baking soda, vinegar, odor killing spray, and the ozone machine. Relief! But by midmorning, the stench was back and even creeping into the upstairs. It seemed to work at first - once the ozone had cleared this morning, it was the nicest the air downstairs has been in a long time. Yesterday I finally broke down and used an ozone machine. I cannot find any correlation between times when the odor occurs and wind, rain, heat, or anything else that might be changing decomp fumes. It will get so strong that the entire floor is absolutely unlivable, and then an hour later there’s no trace of the scent.Īnother thing is that, sometimes even when you can’t smell it, the air is thick and makes your eyes swell like an allergic reaction, and even makes people dizzy after a while. What I really can’t figure out, though, is that it comes and goes. My best guess is that it’s either in the bottom of a sealed-off chimney, or inside a wall. I’ve looked everywhere, inside and out, and can’t locate the source. The entire lower floor of the house (finished partial basement) is affected and oh my god I did not know an odor could be so powerful or so foul. There’s definitely something dead, somewhere, but I can’t find it.
